Privacy policy
Effective October 4, 2026
In short: Windshot doesn't collect, send or share any information about you or what you capture. It has no account, no analytics and no ads, and it makes no network connections. Everything it works with stays on your PC.
What Windshot does with your screen
When you start a capture, Windshot takes a picture of your screen so you can select part of it. The picture is held in memory while you work and is discarded when you finish or cancel. A capture only goes somewhere when you choose to:
- Copy puts it on the Windows clipboard.
- Save writes it to the file and folder you pick.
- Pin keeps it on screen, and stores a copy on your PC so the pin comes back after a restart. Closing the pin deletes that copy.
Copying text
Copy text reads words from the screen with the text recognition built into Windows, which runs entirely on your PC. The text goes on your clipboard and nowhere else.
The clipboard
Windows can keep a history of what you copy (Win + V) and, if you've turned it on, sync it to your other devices through your Microsoft account. Those are Windows features covered by Microsoft's privacy statement, not by Windshot. If you'd rather Windshot's copies stay out of them, turn on Keep copies out of clipboard history in Windshot's settings.
What's stored on your PC
Windshot keeps a few files in its own app data folder on your PC:
- your settings;
- pinned images, until you close them;
- a small log of what the app did and any errors, used for troubleshooting. It records events such as "capture started", never what you captured or copied, and it stays under a fixed size.
None of these files are sent anywhere. Uninstalling Windshot removes them.
What Windshot doesn't do
- No accounts or sign-in.
- No analytics, telemetry, tracking or advertising.
- No network connections of any kind.
- No sharing or selling of any information, because it doesn't have any.
The Microsoft Store
Windshot is distributed through the Microsoft Store. Downloads, updates, reviews and any purchases are handled by Microsoft under the Microsoft Privacy Statement. Microsoft may provide the developer with aggregate statistics such as install counts and crash reports, which don't identify you.
This website
windshot.app uses no cookies, analytics or third-party scripts. Like any website, its hosting provider may keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses and the pages requested, for security and operations.
Children
Windshot collects no personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date. If Windshot ever needed to handle your data differently, this page would say so before that version was released.
